I’ve been studying character design and having fun illustrating little daily moments and trying to make them magical. So far I’ve mostly worked on proportions and the human form. I’ve found that I’m pretty good at copying images and details from a reference (most of the drawing I’ve done in my life has been those kinds of detail studies), but turning those references into something new is a challenge.

So here’s me, jumping rope on the trails. I actually jumped in my back yard, but the forest is more magical. I don’t do a lot of landscapes, so this was fun. I have a lot to learn!

More Challenges

Next, we have a couple illustrations of my boys at Christmastime. I drew this scene so many times, and just couldn’t get it to where I was happy with it. I decided to stop and settled on these two. The first one is more “cartoony” and cute, and the second is a little more detailed with more accurate proportions.

There are things I like and dislike about both… They are just different styles. The first one is quicker and simpler because I don’t need to worry about anything being perfect. I really like the freedom in that. It’s easier to add things from my imagination this way, like the matching shirts. But in the second one, I like how the characters resemble my kids a little more closely. The proportions are mostly correct, just with simplified features. I definitely need to work on my light and shadow. It’s so much harder to wrap my brain around when color is involved.

Which one do you like better, and why? I could really use the feedback!

I love all of them. It depends on what style you are going for. I especially like the one that resembles the boys with their stuffed animals. I think this one has special meaning. But the other one is great too. I love the simplicity of it. The artwork is exceptional! You should be proud of yourself.
