I recently finished a piece I’ve been working on, and I actually love how it turned out so I wanted to share. I’ve been trying to develop a style that uses the realistic sketchy stuff that I love, but also incorporates color. I’m illustrating a children’s book right now, and that’s really helped me get a more efficient workflow down.

Illustration of a mother and child by April Cleaver

This piece is a portrait of Mason and I when he was a baby. I started it because it’s such a precious moment and I wanted to etch it into my brain forever. He turns six years old next month, and he is by far the most strong-willed of my children. He feels very deeply, and every negative emotion is expressed as rage. We’re working on it…

Under all that fire he has the sweetest, most tender little heart. He is a precious son of God, and I feel honored to be his mother. I have no doubt he will do great things one day.

If you’re a young mother, or a mother of any stage really, I recommend reading “Because She is A Mother” by Jeffery R. Holland. It’s a beautiful reminder that all the sacrifices we make as mothers are worthwhile.
